My flat caught fire on the 19th of March 2014 around 4 PM in the evening due to presently unknown reasons and a lot of my stuff was lost to this fire. Despite suffering losses from fire, the flat owner forced me to evacuate the house immediately and in the process assaulted me and my flat mates. We were forced to leave as a lot of local people had gathered around to intimidate us. My security deposit of Rs 60,000 is also with the owner which he didn't return and also forced us to give him the original copy of the rental agreement. When we went to the police in the night, a police personnel visited my house and scolded the manager for making us evacuate immediately after such an accident and later asked us to come tomorrow to meet the Inspector or Sub-Inspector. When we went down there the next day, a different police officer refused to file an FIR and asked us to instead settle this with the owner by paying for all the damages that the owner incurred in the accident. Since we don't have a official complaint registered there might be possibility for further exploitation by the local landlord to gain more money from this apart from the already deposited Rs 60,000 as security deposit. Since the cause of the fire is unknown and not our fault, we should be entitled to receive our deposit back completely at least, if not for the losses incurred by us in the fire. Apart from the losses suffered and the physical violence, we had to go through the harassment of shifting immediately and humiliation at the hands of the local landlord and his accomplices.
