After going ahead with a booking, entering my credit card information, making a payment and receiving confirmation of payment, I get the below message from makemytrip.com saying booking has failed due to a possible sudden drop in seat availability. If they cannot even confirm a seat after the payment has been made, why are these people even running a travel website?

"Sorry! Your booking has failed!
Your payment of Rs. 15140 has been processed successfully. ( View Payment Details )
Your payment has been processed. However the system was unable to confirm your booking. This is a rare occurrence and can happen when there is a sudden drop in seat availability on your chosen flight or a fluctuation in the connectivity with the airline reservation system.

Your payment has been sent for refund processing"

After this failed attempt, I tried logging in and booking tickets for the same dates and the cost has shot up by over Rs.2,000. I booked through cleartrip.com because they seem straight and I've never had issues with them.

I had another bad experience with makemytrip many years ago and since then only use cleartrip.com Expecting makemytrip's service might have improved and due to a coupon promo code I dared to venture to this third grade website and have paid the price (literally).

After this horrible experience, I am never going to use or recommend this horrible website to anyone.

These seem to be a bunch of tricks played by unethical people to get more bookings and traffic to their website and taking customers for a ride.

Also a promo code from Axis bank for 1500 does not seem to be working, probably another in the full bag of tricks they use to take people for a ride!
